Fowlers Bay

We ducked into a tackle store in Adelaide to grab some fishing gear for the kids and the guy told us about a place called Fowlers Bay.  We decided to swing in for a look, what a great spot.  The best thing about Fowlers is that there is bugger all to do except go fishing or watch the whales.

The township is surrounded by massive sand dunes which are slowly inching their way towards the coast.

Everyone had a ball playing on the dunes.

The lil fella trying not to have a stack!

Fowlers Bay is one of a few bays along the Southern Australian coast that hosts migrating and calving whales for three months every year.  We jumped on a boat to go whale watching with Rod, the owner of the caravan park, who operates tours during the whale season.

While we were drifting along with these gentle giants, Rod put a hydrophone in the water so we could listen to the whales.  There were both Southern Right and Humpback whales in the bay and they sound very different.

The kids thought the whale's sounded like they were snoring when they come up for a breath.

When we pulled up to the jetty the locals told us the mullet were on.  I wasn't sure how they knew this because I couldn't see anyone with a cast net ;-) but apparently you catch them with a line down here.  So the kids dashed back to the van to grab the gear and we were into it.

We had a great time pulling these things in fast enough so that the local pelicans and shags didn't get an easy feed.

Our haul.

The idea of eating something we have grown up using for bait took a bit of getting used to.  But when in Rome....  The fish were filleted, floured and thrown straight into a hot pan with a little bit of butter and i have to admit they were good chewing.

More to come.....
